Where Communication Goes Wrong

In 1955, author Rudolf Flesch wrote the now-classic book, “Why Johnny Can’t Read,” which served as a clarion call to educators and parents. While the battle between phonics and whole language continues at the elementary level, we face another issue with members of our workforce. After two years (so far) of our research, it’s clear that communication (or its lack) is a singularly significant issue not just in being able to be understood, but in the ability to get things done. This presentation looks at the areas in which communication fails, the reasons for that failure, and suggests some ways to improve communication at every level, and thereby improve productivity. Specifically the authors look at the communication habits of millenials versus other groups, and some specific difficulties with listening skills, writing skills, audience analysis, presentation skills and communicating for action. Strategies and tactics for improving those skills are then suggested.
