2000 Honorees: Southwest
PA Employers of Choice
In 2000, ten leading Southwestern Pennsylvania employers were recognized by the People Do Matter: Recognizing Innovation in Human Resources Initiative. The initiative honored standout employers whose human resource practices best demonstrate the importance of investing in people. The award was made at the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association's Annual Conference in downtown Pittsburgh.
"In today's tight labor market, being named 'employer of choice' is extremely important," said Steve Mitchell, Ph.D., Director of Workforce Connections. "Globalization, technological change, and shifting labor market dynamics have radically altered the foundation of a company's competitive advantage. In this new economy, people do matter."
The People Do Matter initiative recognized employers in three categories: People, Learning and Development, and Work Structure and Processes.

ABARTA, Development Dimensions International and Bookminders received accolades for creating strategies that communicate vision and strategy throughout the organization, align processes and systems with culture and business strategy, adapt to technological change, and harness high involvement to drive change.
The selected companies received a recognition certificate at a luncheon awards ceremony at the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association (PHRA) annual conference on October 31st. A representative from each company also participated in an interactive panel session as part of the conference.
To encourage innovation in human resources, the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association, the Pittsburgh Technology Council, SMC Business Councils, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, the Community College of Allegheny County, and Workforce Connections founded this initiative to recognize Southwest Pennsylvania employers whose human resource practices best demonstrate the importance of investing in people.
Businesses throughout Southwest Pennsylvania (Allegheny, Armstrong, Beaver, Bedford, Butler, Cambria, Fayette, Greene, Indiana, Lawrence, Somerset, Washington, and Westmoreland counties) are eligible to submit nominations for this initiative. A panel of human resources experts reviewed the nominations and evaluated each on the basis of innovation, results, and ability to be replicated.
