2001 Honorees People Investments Pay: Local Companies Recognized for Innovative HR Practices
People Do Matter initiative honored eight standout companies for excellence in human resource innovation. Winning companies were formally recognized at the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association's Annual Conference in downtown Pittsburgh on October 16, 2001 and continue to receive accolades in the local press.
"In these uncertain times, companies are exploring new ways of building and leveraging talent," said Stephen M. Mitchell, Ph.D. (Director of Workforce Connections and People Do Matter Coordinator). "The resulting innovations in attracting, developing, and retaining talent exemplify the change in practice required to ensure success in a turbulent economic environment."
The People Do Matter initiative salutes employers in three categories: People, Learning and Development, and Work Structure and Processes.
In the People category

Mellon Financial Corporation integrated a targeted recruitment strategy with a specialized learning initiative for non-native English speaking employees,

Medrad, Inc. developed a three-pronged strategy towards attracting and retaining skilled people that identified and developed core behavioral competencies, promoted an internal career ladder program and utilized employee satisfaction surveys, and

Sony Technology Center - Pittsburgh, a repeat winner, turned a work downturn into a chance to invest in the community.
In the Learning and Development category

Bombardier Transportation retained key talent with strategic learning and development investments,

Penn United Technology developed a strategy to build a pipeline of skilled people, and

Pittsburgh Technical Institute worked with other airport area employers to meet shared educational needs.
In the Work Structures and Processes category

FedEx Ground, another repeat winner, created a web-enabled business process to help the company deliver better HR services to its employees, and

Luttner Financial Group, Ltd. broke with industry tradition and adopted a multi-disciplinary team model. The eight winning companies each received a framed certificate of recognition, as well as a $500 voucher to use toward any other people development activity. In addition to coverage in a special supplement to the Pittsburgh Business Times, the firms will be highlighted in program partners' publications. Over the course of the year, recognized companies will also be invited to participate in other educational activities designed to help other companies learn from their experience
