People Do Matter Q&A

Who or what gets nominated?
Human resource, organizational development and learning initiatives are the key initiatives that are nominated for “People Do Matter” awards. This awards initiative does not recognize individual achievement. It recognizes organizational achievement.

There are three primary areas for nominations: people practices, learning and development and work structures and processes. There are also special recognitions given for achievements related to increasing diversity, innovation, significant progress, etc. These awards are determined during the judging process.

Who submits nominations?
Anyone can submit a nomination- an HR department, a company CEO, a client, a vendor, an employee, ect.

How do I get a nomination form?
Download a copy at www.peopledomatter.com or call Becky Fortune at 412-261-5537.

How do I know which category to submit to?
Consider what category best fits your initiative and let us know in your application. But the judges may reclassify you. Let us know if you think your application may fit in more than one category.

How long are the submissions?
The submission should be approximately 3-5 pages. Remember that judges must read through applications. Tell a complete story, but don’t overwhelm your evaluators!

What kind of details are you looking for in the timeline and activities?
Explain the resources required. Did the initiative have a budget? Was staff required? What were the steps involved?

What are you looking for in the question about current status?
Let us know if the project is ongoing. Also, has it evolved or ended? Have employers and managers accepted the initiative? Has the project let to change? Has it been assimilated into the company?

What piece is most often missing from applications?
Results! This is an extremely important part of the application. Let us know what the outcomes were of the initiative and how you measured them. Let us know if you were able to measure as planned. Did you look at benchmarks? Where did they come from? How did you gather data?

What makes an application stand out?
Clearly and completely answer the questions is the first step. No one wants to struggle to read an application. Beyond a well-written response, let us know what you’ve learned from your work. What would you do differently if you had to do it over again? Also, let us know what you’ve done to move away from a “business as usual” mindset.

When do you announce the awards?
Finalists will be announced during February or March of 2008. The winners will be announced at the awards reception on April 17, 2008.

What do past PDM members have to say about winning the award?

Highlights from Pediatrics South Presentation
(Mark Marsen)

“Getting the award was a validation of what we were doing… There had been a nagging feeling that we were guessing. The outside recognition meant a lot. It validated our focused approach.”

“The recognition was particularly helpful when it comes to recruiting—especially with nurses.”
