People Do Matter Overview
What is the People Do Matter Initiative?
Is your organization implementing creative or innovative processes to attract, retain or develop employees?
Created to encourage effective practices in human resources, the People Do Matter initiative recognizes southwestern Pennsylvania employers whose human resource practices best demonstrate the importance of providing workers a positive return on their contributions of time, attention, ideas, knowledge, passion, energy, and social networks to ensure productivity, efficiency, and business results.
What are the criteria for the awards?
The initiative will recognize employers that have adopted creative strategies in three areas:
§ People: Strategies to attract and retain a diverse, high caliber workforce. The focus here is on approaches to recruitment, compensation, recognition, or work-life balance.
§ Learning and Development: Strategies to enhance knowledge creation and knowledge transfer. The focus here is on approaches to link learning with business strategy, measure and value the firm’s investments in learning, leverage intellectual capital, or implement new approaches to training and learning.
§ Work Structures and Processes: Strategies to facilitate change, improve productivity, and create value in the marketplace. The focus here is on approaches to communicate vision and strategy throughout the organization, align processes and systems with business strategy, adapt to technological change, of harness high involvement to drive change.
Who is behind the People Do Matter Initiative?
A Collaboration of Regional Leaders Spearhead the 2005-2006 People Do Matter Awards. The purpose of the People Do Matter (PDM) initiative is to increase regional awareness of human capital investments and to encourage, recognize, and replicate high-performance human resources practices. Newly led by the Pittsburgh Human Resources Association (PHRA), the initiative is made possible through the collaborative efforts of 15 essential partners from around the region. It was founded six years ago by the Allegheny Conference on Community Development in collaboration with the PHRA, the Community College of Allegheny County, the Pittsburgh Chapter of the American Society for Training and Development, the Pittsburgh Technology Council, and SMC Business Councils.
Each year, Southwestern Pennsylvania employers are encouraged to submit nominations recognizing innovative practices in three areas: People, Learning & Development, and Work Structure & Processes. Nominations are judged by a panel of regional human resource experts, and winners are celebrated at an awards ceremony and reception. This year it took place on Wednesday, April 5, 2006 at the Rivers Club in downtown Pittsburgh. PDM honorees are also recognized in the local media and at regional workforce development events throughout the year.
In continued collaboration with the Allegheny Conference and the initiative’s numerous sponsors, partners and community advisors, PHRA intends to carry on the tradition and quality of this prestigious initiative. PDM’s 2005-2006 chairs were Glenda Morgan, SPHR, Chris Ramsey, and Vanessa Lund, who serves as a Vice President on PHRA’s Executive Committee.
